Top Cities for Jobs are San Jose, S.F. and Seattle If you’re a job-seeker, you might expect tech-industry hotbeds like Seattle and San Francisco to be happening places for employment prospects. But those aren’t the only cities that are hiring, according to new research from Glassdoor. In its new ranking of the 25 best cities for jobs, Glassdoor ranked the top 5 cities for jobs as follows: San Jose San Francisco Seattle Boston Washington, D.C. Chicago (#22) has the most available jobs with a little over 170,000, while top spot holder San Jose also has the distinction of having the only six-figure median salary of $112,000. The flip side is that the median home price in San Jose is also the highest among the ranked cities at nearly a million dollars ($956,500, to be exact). The Golden State had three cities in the top 25 (San Diego was #21)., but so did a heartland sleeper, Ohio: Columbus and Cleveland ranked #14 and #15, respectively, while Cincinnati ranked #23. According to Allison Berry, Glassdoor community expert, Ohio’s strengths are a large number of open positions combined with a much lower cost of living than big coastal hubs like New York City, San Francisco or Los Angeles. “Ohio stands out for offering some of the greatest job prospects along with a lower cost of living that allows more employees to live comfortably,” she said. To come up with its rankings, Glassdoor looked at the number of job openings in each city, the median salary and the median home value to get a sense of the cost of living. The site also analyzed a couple quality-of-life metrics that indicate how happy people are at work and how well they can achieve work-life balance in their lives. Glassdoor also flagged plenty of hot jobs that have little to do with computers. A top gig in Boston, for instance, is nurse practitioner; creative directors are in demand in Chicago and Austin, and phlebotomists and graphic designers are in high demand in Cincinnati â€" proving that there really is something out there for all different kinds of job-seekers today.
